Heinz Meixner defected from East Germany on May 5, 1963 by driving under the barricade at Checkpoint Charlie after removing the windshield from his car.

Anybody know what kind of car it is?

Sure looks like a second-generation AH Sprite/first generation MG Midget. I don’t know how an East German citizen would have got his hands on one of those, though.

He used a Mark IV Austin Healey Sprite.

Echo51 says it’s an Austin Healey.

That takes balls so big, I’m not sure how he fit them in the car.

He apparently got it from a rental agency.

There once was a man from Boston
Who drove around in an Austin
There was room for his ass
And a gallon of gas
But his balls hung out and he lost ‘em

My family is good friends with a woman who also escaped from the DDR back in the day. I don’t know her story, but I remember it was harrowing. She’s also one of the best people I have ever met.

As for the DDR, any country that has to but “Democratic” in its name probably isn’t.

Did some more research. He was an Austrian working in East Germany. So he had a transit passport.

We even have an active Oppo member who fled Eastern Germany shortly before the wall fell.

Interestingly enough that very same car was used several months later by Argentinian Norbert Konrad to smuggle his East German girlfriend out of East Berlin. Trying to find out more about Heinz Meixner I stumbled across this very interesting December 1986 article from the Chicago Tribune.
